More than a Feeling!

Marriage is God's idea.  Before government, before the church was created - God created marriage.  It is the foundation stone for a great society.

Genesis 2:18-25
 
1. Marry your best friend.
 
The foundation of a great marriage is a great friendship. God wants marriage to be fun!  Fulfilling!  Lasting!

There are 3 kinds of love:
Agape – God's unconditional love
Phileo – friendship
Eros – sexual, passion love
 
A great marriage has all three kinds of love.
 
Some people are waiting for God to drop them a partner out of the sky, without making any friendships.  Other people are constantly on the make for a date.  Instead - make many friends and let your life partner emerge out of that pool of friendships. 
 
2. Stay out of the physical side of relationships while you’re dating.
 
Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a harlot is one body with her? For He says, "The two will become one flesh."  
- 1 Corinthians 6:16
 
You can’t think straight once you’ve gotten lip-locked!  You get infatuated, and you start to ignore the warning signs that this person may not be the right one for you!

There is a soul tie that takes place when two become one flesh -  your mind, will and emotions.  That soul tie can be hard to break after a relationship breaks down. 
 
Romance is beautiful. Physical intimacy is beautiful - In the right time.
 
3. Look for a shared set of values and vision.
 
Get the first button on the shirt right:  He/she loves God - at your level.
 
Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?   - 2 Corinthians 6:14-15
 
4. For those of you already married - How's your friendship with your spouse?
 
Maybe - just maybe - your marriage is boring because you are boring.  Marriage is like a field:  Sow into it and reap; always take from it and it gets barren.
 
Men – we go out golfing, fishing, goofing off with our pals - but never do anything fun with our wife. (Then we want her to have sex with us at the end of the day!)  We need to treat her like our best friend.
 
Ladies – we nag, try to control, try to place expectations. Then, we wonder why he seems distant.  Are you as sweet to your husband as you are to your best girlfriends?
 
5. It's not too late to start making it right.
 
Some of us started wrong in this whole thing – looking for love in all the wrong places. But it's not too late to start making it right. God wants to release life into our marriages - a revival of love, kindness, romance, fun, friendship, partnership!  A great marriage is the foundation of a great family!
