Lit Up and On Display - Joy #11
Joy: Lit Up and On Display
Philippians 2:14-18 Do all things without grumbling or disputing; that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may have cause to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain. But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. And you too, I urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me.
God wants to put us on display for His glory. He wants us to live a life that burn bright to glorify Him!
As Christians, we should use every method we can to reach people, get our church in front of people and promote Christianity. WE are God’s best advertisement. The Bible says to prove yourself as lights in the world.
God desires a distinctive visibility. Don’t blend in. Be culturally relevant, but still distinctively different. We need to be lights that are put on full display, standing out among our generation.
There are three distinctive things that light us up.
1. A positive, grateful attitude
Philippians 2:14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing
You can be a light with a positive testimony. A complaining attitude will never give you a perspective that allows for positive change to take place. You can look for things to complain about or you can look for things to be thankful for. You will always find what you are looking for.
Thankfulness focuses you on the positives, complaining focuses you on the negatives.
2. Holding fast to the word of life
Philippians 2:16 holding fast the word of life
Living by the word of God distinguishes you from the world. Not church attendance. Not sermon listening. Not even accepting Christ and getting forgiven. Hold fast to His Word and you will live a distinguished life!
Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
You can change your mind to God’s way of viewing things or the world can change you to see it their way. We are being bombarded by the world’s philosophy of living.
If you want to be kept from venturing down the wrong path, you have to hold on tightly to the Word of Life. The daily grind of life will want to wrench the Word of Life from your grasp.
3. Joy will set you apart
Philippians 2:17-18 But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. And you too, I urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me.
A truly joyful life will stand out as a light. Not just a happy life because circumstances are going the way you want them to, but the joy of the Lord. Joy is not a personality quality but a character quality – CHOOSE joy despite your cirumstances! True joy is found when you allow your life to become poured out for others.
Find joy by finding something worth giving your life to and pour your life out!
