Overcoming Opposition #2 - Joy #6
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; in no way alarmed by your opponents—which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me. - Philippians 1:27-30
If you watch the news, you know the world we live in is full of tension and conflict. There are battles taking place everywhere – both physically and spiritually. Whenever we give our lives to Christ and begin advancing the kingdom of God, we will be in conflict with a lot of what’s going on in the world.
We battle on three fronts: the world, the flesh and the devil. As long as we are living in this human body, we will battle with “the flesh.” Even the godliest person alive is always going to be fighting this fight.
According to Romans 7:14-23, there is something in you that wants to do right and obey God. The spirit wants to do right but the flesh wants to do wrong.
You want to lose weight but you keep eating junk. You want to read your Bible but instead get on Facebook and waste an hour. You want to pray but instead flip on the TV. You want to be pure but put yourself in the wrong situation with the wrong people. You want to do right but keep doing wrong.
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. - Galatians 5:17
Remember, your battle is different than someone else’s. It might have to do with anger, sexual issues, pornography, jealousy or greed. Be sure not to judge someone else’s weakness out of your area of strength.
What is the solution to our flesh battles?
Jesus sets us free! But even if we love Jesus, we can still find ourselves fighting a battle.
For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life. -Galatians 6:8
Do you sow to your flesh or to your spirit? Everything you engage in is feeding either your flesh or your spirit. The one you feed is the one that grows.
The flesh is not overcome with just will power. The power of sin is greater than your willpower. We need the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus to set us free.
Jesus came to set us free. He came to give us life and lift us higher. That’s what he has in mind for every person. There’s no condemnation but there is a call to open your life to life. Begin to feed your spirit and watch it grow!
